01. Nolstagic City

For the possibility of a city, the expansion and evolvement of a city will inevitably incur certain outcomes whether beneficial or irretrievable. Developing from Hoddle grid to high-rise buildings, from the natural landscape to the climate crisis, population growth affected the way of building accommodating more people within a limited area, apartment buildings in Melbourne CBD are evident. This leaves us pathetically that city expansion is limited because of lacking spaces and global awareness of sustainable development which should be stressed in a long term.

Chinatown epitomizes their home country and spiritual bond for those with Chinese cultural backgrounds. People from all over the world mainly Asian people gathered together in communities and are subject to a strong sense of cultural belonging and sometimes nostalgia in the communities like boxhill in a foreign country. The architectural style of Chinatown does seem not to blend very well with the context of Australian streets and bldgs, it shows respect for everyone across different cultures and allowing people to access and accommodate.

02. "Knot" this one

"Knot" this one pavilion is to provide an immersive experience with ground/nature for adults and children with soft music or the sound of nature. The  "knot"-looking pavilion is on a sloped topography to resonate with the configuration of the pavilion. The first detail on the left demonstrates a mini-performance space (the person on piano, maybe other instruments played in the left or middle seating area). With the covering of pavilion panels, it induces curiosity and interest of visitors coming from the lakeside. The other detailed images show the growing vegetation both at the top shelter and bottom which may enhance the “green” atmosphere around the pavilion. In the middle of the pavilion where is sheltered, it is an optimal location surrounded by natural elements. Visitors may have fun lying down on the concrete tubes or relaxing with music. The circulation paths on the ground within the pavilion are relatively simple either from left to right or the other way around. Around the pavilion, the movement of visitors may be more active due to the seating areas and the sloped topography which makes the design more involving.

A simple library using 2 geometries, cube and sphere to create 3 dimensionally carved spaces which then define the positive and negative spaces for interesting activities within the building. This contemporary library is supposed to be open, harmonious, and vibrant which accommodates human interactions and programmatic activities in this urban context.

In the process of defining architectural forms, a dynamic façade is reasonably formed and enhanced through the application of materials. This visual façade design facilitates the connection of the library and surrounding laneways especially the Pender place which is less used than other laneways to some extent.

In terms of the internal configuration, the three floors below are connected by the staircases in the atrium apart from the lifts on the perimeter at the back of the building cutting through the whole library.

The upper two levels are of a relatively private atmosphere containing most of the personal and small group study rooms.
